To say the global health crisis has changed things would be an understatement, to say the least, but it’s important for business leaders to consider what these changes mean. A return to the way things were might be a comforting thought, but make no mistake—there is no going back to pre-pandemic life. How work is done and where it is done has fundamentally changed, and resistance to that change is a missed opportunity to create something better. To fully take advantage, it’s important that managers not make assumptions. Ask employees for their preferences and what their experiences were over the past year. To map out what the future looks like, involve a diversity of opinions. No one individual has all the answers, so tap into the wisdom of a group of colleges. Inquire into what worked and what failed in individual conversations and dedicate time for the team to reflect as a group on the past year. From these conversations and introspection, develop new norms for hybrid office life or remote work experiences.
