No one likes to receive criticism, but it’s an important aspect of growth. After all, if no one ever tells us what we are doing wrong, we’d be doomed to repeat the same mistakes. Sometimes this criticism might feel unjustified, but oftentimes it’s valid. Why then is it so difficult to respond when someone tells us to do something differently? For most people, criticism is viewed as an attack, which leads to a fight, flight, or freeze response. This can lead to resentment and miscommunication, so it’s best to avoid this perception. How? Repeat this three-word phrase to yourself when receiving feedback: Don’t feel attacked. You’re not going to be perfect at first, but by training your brain to not immediately respond with one of the three Fs, you can receive feedback positively and use it to grow in your career.
