Engagement Is Stagnating, But Some Organizations Are Getting It Right

After hitting record highs, employee engagement in the US seems to be stagnating. According to Gallup’s research, employee engagement saw its first annual decline in about a decade, slipping from 36 percent to 34 percent. While this might be discouraging to HR professionals, the upside is that there are organizations that are getting engagement right— so much so that they’ve doubled the national average. What are they doing differently? First off, they’re making the values that guide their cultures clear and sticking to them to guide business decisions. They’re also embracing flexible work environments and considering what the future of work will look like. Rather than dictating tradition, they’re listening to employees and adapting to their needs. They’re focusing on their employees’ well-being and tailoring communication styles to meet people where they are. Finally, they’re enabling their managers and leaders to adapt through times of change by upskilling employees and allowing team members to play to their own strengths.
