People don’t leave jobs; they leave managers. Gallup recently qualified that notion by revealing at least 70 percent of the variance in employee engagement scores is directly caused by managers. If you want an engaged, productive workforce that isn’t hamstrung by constant turnover, you need formalized managerial training programs. No one is born a manager—the role requires refining skills over time—and the more training you can offer, the better. Team building is an extremely important skill that many managers lack. Fostering a collaborative team culture is crucial to organizational success, and instilling a shared sense of purpose in team members isn’t an intrinsic ability for most managers. Time management—using one’s time effectively—is important for all employees. Still, it’s crucial for managers juggling multiple tasks throughout the day and often being asked to shift priorities quickly. Calendar management, delegation, and stress reduction tactics are all important in a robust manager training program.
