For organizational continuity and continued sustainability, your next generation of leaders should come from your own ranks. According to a recent Deloitte study, 80 percent of managers and executives said cultivating leadership was a high priority for their organization, but only 41 percent felt they were getting it right. To foster the next generation of leaders, start by establishing internship programs to find potential. Identifying talent is a skill, and these programs can help identify the characteristics of strong leaders. Traits that commonly appear in potential leaders are a hunger for more knowledge, a willingness to be held accountable, and a team-oriented attitude. When these prospective leaders are identified, investing in them early is also important. A solid leadership training program for the right candidates will have compounding effects on organizational success.
