The way we think about work is rapidly changing. Remote positions are increasing, flexibility is nonnegotiable, and employees are making more demands regarding their personal and professional development. We’re even rethinking when work is traditionally performed. Many organizations across the globe are participating in a four-day workweek trial program, and many are seeing successes in terms of productivity and employee retention. Samantha Losey, managing director of Unity, a PR firm in London, says the new arrangement is working extremely well for her workers. Productivity hasn’t lagged, morale is up, and stress is down. And her experience isn’t unique. In a recent survey of 41 participating companies, 86 percent said they were likely or extremely likely to keep the truncated schedule after the pilot period concludes. When asked for her advice for others thinking about adopting a four-day workweek, Losey had this to share: “It’s a messy situation at the beginning, but you have to persevere because it’s worth it. When you see the value and the impact on your people and the way that their spark comes back—that’s powerful to see. The other thing that this has done is banded the team together in a whole other way. They are so much closer. They have each others’ backs so much more, and they’re trying to make it work for each other as much as for themselves.”
