When I started my career, our field was called “training,” and it usually fell under the human resources umbrella. While there is nothing particularly wrong with that hierarchical structure, training alone did not validate all the skills, responsibilities, and tasks associated with the job. Today, talent development or talent management allows us to better define the large number of roles, skills, and experiences that we bring to any table.
