A long-term study of the benefits and drawbacks of a four-day workweek declared the schedule an “overwhelming success” in Iceland. The trial, which took place from 2015–2019, demonstrated that productivity remained the same or improved in most participating cross-industry workplaces. Overall, employees who worked shorter hours for the same pay said they felt less stressed and experienced less burnout. They also reported spending more time with their families and participating in domestic activities. Gudmundur Haraldsson, a researcher on the project, said, “The Icelandic shorter working week journey tells us that not only is it possible to work less in modern times but that progressive change is possible too.” The results have spurred unions to renegotiate working patterns. An estimated 86 percent of Iceland’s workforce now has moved to working shorter weeks or will gain the right to in the future.
