Too often, the decision to send an employee overseas is made without the necessary groundwork to ensure success. The number one reason international assignments are not successful is the employee's or his/her family's inability to adjust to living overseas. Realistic predeparture expectations, motivation for going (for example, for the adventure, career development, or to make a fresh start), a positive attitude, and proper support systems are critical factors for global success. Unfortunately many companies only assess the candidate's technical expertise, management abilities, or previous international experience.
