Leadership in a Distributed Workforce

Leadership is rapidly changing as we reorganize our professional lives. To be an effective leader in a hybrid work environment, there are myriad factors to consider, and numerous pitfalls to avoid. For one, don’t use employee monitoring software. Although it may be tempting to “keep an eye” on folks, if you need to use it, it’s a major red flag that either you don’t trust your employees or there are significant performance issues that should be addressed. For more successful leadership, make sure you understand that your job is to provide your team with the resources they need to be successful in their positions. If there are roadblocks, it’s your job to clear them. But to know where these roadblocks exist, clear channels for communication and two-way feedback must be present. Make sure you check in with employees regularly to understand their challenges. Finally, promote independence and autonomy in your team. You hired these people for a reason. Let them do their jobs well.
