Motivation is extremely important to achieving successful performance. Without it, employees have no reason to perform well on the job. Motivation can be extrinsic--like money, benefits, or awards--or intrinsic--like confidence or personal responsibility. Although extrinsic motivation can be easier for a company to control, intrinsic motivation is just as important, if not more so, when it comes to high-performing employees.
