The onboarding process for new employees is like diving into a swimming pool, where a good experience leaves a positive impression but a poor one can be painful and embarrassing. A survey by Paychex highlights the impact of inadequate onboarding on employee retention, particularly for remote and hybrid workers. While 52 percent of new hires are satisfied with their onboarding, a significant 32 percent find it confusing, and 22 percent perceive it as disorganized. These numbers are even worse for remote workers, with 36 percent finding the process confusing and unhelpful. The survey also reveals that 52 percent of new hires feel undertrained, with employees of small organizations and remote workers experiencing this the most. Around 50 percent of newly hired employees are considering leaving their jobs, but this skyrockets to 80 percent for those who feel undertrained due to poor onboarding. Conversely, only 7 percent of well-trained employees plan to leave soon. Small-company employees are more likely to quit than those in large companies, and interestingly, even satisfied Gen Z employees are likely to plan a quick departure (58 percent), making onboarding a critical experience for all new hires. If you’ve made mistakes in your onboarding process, all isn’t lost. Re-onboarding—revisiting the onboarding process—can revitalize teams, with employees becoming more focused, energized, productive, and efficient, leading to a significant increase in employee retention.
