Should You Go Back to Your Old Job?

Returning to a former employer after leaving a new job might be difficult, but sometimes it’s the right career move. Before making such a decision, individuals should carefully assess their values, the reasons for leaving their previous job, and the motivations for wanting to return. Start by identifying what’s important to you. Reflect on your values and what you want from a job and company. Consider aspects like the type of work you enjoy, the work environment, and the interactions you desire at work. Define each value to understand if your current or former job fulfills them. It can also be helpful to assess why you left. Objectively evaluate the reasons for leaving your previous employer. Create two columns to compare why you left with what’s attracting you back. Consider if returning would address the reasons for your departure. You should also seek support from your current colleagues and manager if you believe you can succeed in your new role after adjusting to the change. Sharing your struggles and seeking advice can help build relationships and ease your adjustment. If you determine that returning to your previous employer aligns better with your values and career goals, you should clearly articulate why you left your previous job and why you want to return, focusing on the specific reason for your departure. Address your self-awareness and emotional intelligence regarding the previous situation. Talk to supportive former colleagues, and discuss your interest in returning with former colleagues to gather information about potential opportunities and challenges within the company. Finally, craft an effective proposal for return: Demonstrate how you can bring more value to your former employer than other candidates. Showcase any upskilling, awareness of the company’s current state, and problem-solving abilities. At the end of the day, self-awareness and emotional intelligence will be critical in all conversations as they demonstrate personal growth and commitment to the former employer.
