In another major win for remote work, Spotify recently announced it will allow its employees to work from anywhere without negatively adjusting their compensation. The new work-from-anywhere program allows all 6,550 of the company’s employees to choose how they want to work—either from home, the office, or at co-working spaces the company will pay for. Executives from the streaming service say this is the future of work, and many others are adopting similar structures. At Facebook, “experienced” employees can work from home if their manager will allow it, and Twitter’s CEO has said employees who do not need to work in an office to perform their duties can work remotely. Travis Robinson, Spotify’s head of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, said the move will promote better work-life balances and improve employee morale. “Most of our offices are in large cities like New York, London, and Stockholm, but we know that moving to or staying in these cities isn’t always realistic—or attractive—to potential employees,” Robinson said. “This is an opportunity to scrap the idea that big cities are the only places where meaningful work can happen because we know firsthand that isn’t true. We want employees to come as they are, wherever they are, and whatever their circumstances are.”
