In today’s tumultuous labor market, business leaders are understanding how important employee retention is and how complex the issue can be. Keeping top talent on staff has become a priority for many, but how can this be accomplished in the face of the Great Resignation? One way to start is to assess your team members’ roles. One of the primary reasons that employees leave is a lack of work satisfaction, which happens when an employee feels like they are putting in hard work but not achieving their professional goals. Don’t be afraid to have difficult conversations with your employees about their skills, their professional desires, and if their role is fulfilling. Communication and recognition are also important elements in the employee retention equation and have become even more important as the transition to remote work schedules has become more widespread. Make sure you’re checking in frequently and appropriately celebrating successes. Finally, it’s time to quit micromanaging. Controlling managers kill productivity and morale. If you’ve hired well, you should be able to trust employees are getting their work done. Get out of their way and give them the tools they need to become more successful.
