This year’s soccer competition reinforces a few important lessons in the competitive world of workplace learning and talent management.

In just about every corner of the globe, World Cup mania seems to have taken over bars and local water coolers. Even Forbes commented that “World Cup fever has taken over workplaces. The few employees who are passionate soccer fans have talked of nothing else, and even soccer newbies, or ‘newbs,’ have begun to learn names like Messi and Neymar.” According to #FIFA, the 2014 global tournament has set viewing records in many countries, including the USA. The USA–Portugal game (a gut-wrenching tie) was watched by more Americans than the NBA. Fans are drawn by this year’s edition of dramatic finishes, upsets from less-heralded teams, and a record total of 136 goals scored. As a “newb,” I don’t profess to know much about the game. But as a witness to some of its incredible highs and lows, I can see that the World Cup competition reinforces a few important lessons in the competitive, fast-paced world of workplace learning and talent management.
