The past year and a half have been tumultuous. Rapid changes in the way we work have been deeply challenging, both personally and organizationally. While uncertainty holds sway, one thing is for sure; we’re witnessing one of the largest workforce shifts of our lifetime. With this in mind, some forward-thinking companies—particularly those in the tech space—are doing everything they can to attract and retain talent. One of the most effective ways they’re doing this is to prioritize training, upskilling, and reskilling in their workforces. Amazon is leading this charge. Last week, the retail giant announced it would hire 55,000 new employees at a massive jobs event on September 15. It will be launching numerous new training and educational opportunities for employees. The company said it will offer fully-funded college tuition, GED, and ESL support for nearly 1 million operational employees starting early next year. Ultimately, the company views such initiatives as a win-win—for the employees and the organization. “Upskilling is a team sport,” said Ardine Williams, Amazon’s vice president of workplace development. “These programs are focused on the communities where we’re located. By creating a pipeline of skilled workers, we can improve the overall economic environment, which benefits everyone.”
