Augmented reality and virtual reality are often incorrectly used interchangeably. They are similar, but while virtual reality immerses users in an entirely new digital world, augmented reality takes aspects of current, real-world environments and alters them. This real-time combination allows AR to have many meaningful uses in the training industry, enhancing the comprehension and delivery of training materials in many ways. For one, AR-based training is far more engaging than traditional classroom methodology. People learn by doing, and AR allows for hands-on learning in structured, interactive ways. AR also improves safety in dangerous industries. The fact of the matter is that traditional training can only go so far in handling dangerous situations, while AR can take these lessons several steps forward. Finally, AR can significantly shorten the learning curves for highly technical positions, showing trainees how things should work and what to do when things go wrong. While there are limitations with the technology, this emergent form of employee training is set to grow exponentially in the coming years.
