Millions upon millions of articles, books, and studies have been written on what it takes to be a good leader. There’s so much information out there that it seems overwhelming. One expert says one thing, and another says something completely different. How can aspiring leaders cut through the noise and identify what they need to succeed? One expert thinks he has the answer. Gary Burnison, CEO of one of the world’s largest organizational consulting firms, has worked for over a decade to identify the skills successful leaders possess. He says it boils down to four key skills: adaptability, curiosity, detail-oriented, and a tolerance for ambiguity. Adaptability first refers to the ability to be comfortable with unanticipated changes and adjust to their constraints. Curiosity is the ability to problem-solve in novel ways. Being detail-oriented is the ability to carry out a multitude of tasks with accuracy. Tolerance for ambiguity means a leader is comfortable with uncertainty and willing to confidently make decisions with incomplete information. After assessing nearly 30,000 entry-level, mid-level, and C-suite leaders, Burnison argues that these four traits are what it takes to succeed.
