The nature of work is changing. As the global health crisis dramatically shifted employees’ priorities and changed the fundamental nature of what we conceptualize work to be and allowed us to reimagine where and how that work is performed, so too must we reimagine what it is HR departments should and shouldn't be responsible for. Gone are the days where human resources professionals were strictly concerned with enforcing corporate policy, providing access to mandated training, and hiring and firing situations. Today’s HR departments are responsible for dictating culture and helping organizations navigate the waters of significant change. So what skills do HR professionals need to be successful in this new world of work? Perhaps the most important is empathy. According to a recent study conducted by Businessolver, 93 percent of employees say they’re more likely to remain at a company whose leadership is empathetic. HR needs to center itself on this concept and become the source of compassion and understanding that flows through a company’s culture.
