The modern workplace is extremely demanding, and by most measures, employee stress levels are breaking records. Most people believe that burnout is an individual problem, though—one that can be solved by an improvement in work ethic. This is not the case. Burnout is a systemic issue and one that is affected by our relationships with our work. When it comes to solving burnout in your organization, there are six main causes to consider and address: the workload and the resources to meet demands; employees’ level of control over the way they conduct their work; the rewards and recognition, or lack thereof, for a job well done; the community and comradery employees feel with their colleagues; the fair and equitable treatment from one employee to another; and the cohesion between an employee’s personal values and the expressed cultural values of their organization. When one or more of these elements is in deficit, burnout will occur.
