The Soft Skills Needed to Navigate Uncertainty

Published Mon Apr 26 2021

While technical and functional skills are still extremely important, these uncertain times have reaffirmed the importance of certain soft skills in candidates for hiring managers. Not the least of these is resilience. If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that we live in a world that can be disrupted in any number of ways at any moment. The ability to adapt, learn, and work toward a solution despite uncertainty is critically important in modern employees, and the ability to remain optimistic in challenging times will continue to be crucial. The ability to take initiative is also emerging as a top soft skill for many hiring managers. “As we continue to work remotely, it’s crucial for new hires to be able to motivate themselves to meet deadlines and produce high-quality work rather than being motivated by the pressure of a colleague or manager peering over your shoulder," says Andy Knell, CEO of creative specialist recruiter AK Creative. The ability to go the extra mile is a differentiating factor for many, and the tenacity it takes to be successful in that regard is indicative of a top-tier candidate.
