Managers need to prioritize four things to keep up retention levels and engagement. The first is one-on-one meetings with team members. These meetings should focus on professional development, recognizing recent achievements, and overall morale and engagement. Second, the recognition element is critical. Employees who are recognized more frequently are far more likely to view their managers as effective, so make this your second priority. Third, your management style must lead with empathy. Feeling understood and valued is critical in keeping employees engaged and keeping team members well-being where it should be. Finally, prioritize leadership training. “Managers are a critical line of defense in keeping employees engaged in the workplace,” said Natalie Baumgartner, chief workforce scientist at Achievers. “However, without training and development, how can leaders expect managers to address problems and exceed expectations as issues arise? In 2021, employers must put a greater emphasis on manager training if they hope to increase employee engagement and create a positive work environment—whether remote or in the physical workplace.”
