One of the biggest trends that shaped the American workplace in 2021 was the seismic shift of power from employer to employee. This led to a massive exodus and subsequent workforce disruptions, which one expert—Anthony Klotz, an organizational psychologist and professor at Texas A&M—dubbed the “Great Resignation.” With 2022 upon us, what does Klotz see coming down the pike? He predicts that the momentum of the Great Resignation will slow during the next year, but it will not cease entirely. He also feels that flexible work arrangements will continue to grow in popularity and become the norm at most organizations. “A silver lining of this horrible pandemic is that the world of work will take a huge positive step forward for workers,” he says. “Work will fit around our personal lives rather than our personal lives fitting around work.” With this, though, he says that talent pools will become much larger. As organizations become more comfortable with remote workforces, they will be free to hire across state and even international borders, which means remote positions will become more competitive. “In the United States, employees tend to be paid higher wages than people in many other countries,” he said. “If you’re a remote organization, you can recruit workers from all over the world who can do the same job for a cheaper rate.”
