The best facilitators, presenters, and instructors can capture and maintain the focus and attention of their participants. How do they do it, you might wonder? There are a number of tools available in the facilitator’s “tool belt”—from movement, to voice modulation, to gestures and other nonverbal communication. In my years of observing many great speakers and presenters, I have found one small, often overlooked, technique that great speakers all seem to have in common: They purposely use phrases intended to gain the focus of their participants. I call these, simply, focus phrases.
