Using VR to Hone Soft Skills

Soft skills, such as effective communication and conflict resolution, are important skills in the workplace, but they can be difficult to teach. That’s where virtual reality comes into play. The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) in the UK has partnered with VR training vendor Bodyswaps to create a training module called “Navigating Angry Conversations.” This module allows medical professionals to practice dealing with confrontational situations in a 3D virtual environment. The training provides feedback on participants’ responses, speech patterns, and gestures, allowing them to learn from their mistakes. VR training offers an immersive and safe environment for workers to practice and build confidence in challenging situations. It enhances skills like empathy, patience, and effective communication, which are crucial in diffusing heated encounters with clients. Generative AI, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is being incorporated into VR training to create more realistic interactions with avatars in these training modules. The use of VR for soft skills training is still in its early stages, but it complements traditional training methods and provides a safe space for learners to practice and improve their skills. While VR does not replace in-person training, it can be a valuable tool to enhance the learning experience and prepare healthcare professionals for real-world confrontational situations.
