From more simplistic 2D video games to the most complicated 3D games that occupy vast in-game worlds, an infinite number of possibilities to create or convert existing content into learning video games exist. And, as you might suspect, there are also quite a few possible benefits to reap. These benefits include making a great impact on learner engagement and motivation, increasing ROI, and even shortening training time. In preparation for this article, I took an informal poll of colleagues, talked to people in the TD community, and revisited online discussions I have read over the years about this topic. The consensus seems to be that many organizations fears of lack of game-development skills and hefty price tags are holding them back from investigating this option further. Are there viable entry points for medium or even small learning organizations to develop learning video games?
