Want to Get Promoted? Learn How to Negotiate

Negotiation isn’t just a skill for the interview process—we negotiate all the time in our day-to-day lives. Sure, there are salary negotiations, but we also negotiate the projects we want to tackle, how we spend our time, and what we want out of our careers. As such, it’s important to understand how effective negotiation works and to be unafraid of applying this skill. To negotiate promotion successfully, start by focusing on outcomes rather than needs. If you start with “I need” or “I want,” the conversation is generally less productive. Aligning your request with organizational goals establishes credibility. Additionally, focus on capabilities more than titles. Ask to take on the responsibilities of the job title you’re looking for, establish success, and demonstrate that success in concrete ways. Finally, it can help to look for advice from the outside. Rather than seeking out a mentor, assemble an informal “advisory board” of individuals you respect with differing experiences and backgrounds. This will help you look at problems from new perspectives and give you better ideas of how to succeed in your advancement goals.
