As the vaccine rollout gains momentum and leadership is eyeing a return to normalcy, it should be made clear that some things have changed forever—particularly in the business world. For one, working from home is going to be the expectation, not the exception. The most likely way this will play out is a hybrid work model where “work” is performed at home, and necessary team activities like meetings and such will occur in physical office spaces. This will redefine the way we think of office space in general. “We’re starting to think about the office as a tool in our toolkit for getting certain kinds of work done,” Ali Rayl, Slack’s vice president of customer experience said. “Folks come into the office a couple times a week, they have plans with colleagues to get together and brainstorm and plan collaboration in person.” Most workers will likely spend the majority of their week working remotely and come to the office once or twice a week. However, this flexibility needs to come with clear boundaries. As the number of people working remotely has increased, so has the notion that work never ends. The blurred lines between “work” and “life” have left people feeling overwrought and exhausted. “Flexible” work schedules need to be viewed as a double-edged sword, or employees can rapidly burn out. Training on how to manage time and tactics to create a meaningful work-life balance will become increasingly important.
