We like to talk about how important communication and transparency are in the workplace, but that only goes so far. Even in the most open workplaces, there are still topics that sometimes feel off-limits, and if communication between team members and leadership is stifled by intimidation and fear, your employees aren’t telling you everything. For one, they need purpose. According to a recent study, nearly half of workers suffer from low energy levels, complaining that they find no meaning in their work. To remedy this, it’s important to search for the “why” of your business. If the answer is “to make money,” it’s likely that your employees are unfulfilled. Employees also need better work-life balance and more flexibility in their schedules. It’s difficult to ask for, particularly in a fast-paced environment where going the extra mile is encouraged—if not required—but if work-life balance isn’t prioritized, your employees are quickly going to burn out. Finally, your employees need to feel connected. With the pandemic impacting all aspects of life, loneliness is running rampant, and feelings of isolation at work are becoming more commonplace. Look for opportunities to help your employees connect with one another and promote a sense of belonging.
