As of 2022, only 22,000 artificial intelligence specialists existed worldwide, according to a Deloitte survey. A couple of years later, as AI continues to expand, Asana's 2024 State of AI at Work report reveals that 82 percent of workers report their organizations have still not provided generative AI training. The company's Work Innovation Lab conducted the research in tandem with Anthropic.

The study, a survey of about 5,000 knowledge workers in the US and the UK, found that a lack of training and guidance is hindering AI adoption in the workplace. The research indicates the technological advancements represent a turning point for companies. "The cost of inaction is too high to ignore," the report notes. "Employees are already charging ahead with AI, but without a clear roadmap, they'll only lead to disappointment."

Generative AI training will benefit both employees and organizations, the report states. Two-thirds of workers using generative AI have experienced productivity gains because they use the technology. To achieve AI maturity, the report suggests implementing the 5 Cs:

  • Comprehension. Businesses must invest in formal education, training, and upskilling to increase AI literacy and comprehension across the employee base.

  • Concerns. It's not enough to adopt AI tools. Companies need to invest
in the proper AI tools for their purposes instead of investing in AI fueled by bad data. Bad data, according to research firm Prolific, is "corrupted by bias, flawed by incorrect standardization, or obtained by improper research."

  • Collaboration. Invest in AI systems that work with people. Individuals who see AI as a teammate rather than a tool are 33 percent more likely to report productivity gains.

  • Context. Share AI guidelines with employees to alleviate any apprehension. According to the Asana report, only 13 percent of companies have developed internal AI guidelines.

  • Calibration. Organizations can't improve if they're not receiving feedback. Forty-one percent of companies don't collect any employee feedback on AI tools.
