I have worked in the L&D field for more than 20 years; however, as with many others in the industry, landing in L&D and becoming an instructional designer are both things that accidentally occurred. When I started working in healthcare at our small community hospital in Ontario, Canada, it had around 1,000 staff, including physicians. Canadian hospitals don't have large budgets for internal training departments and, understandably, they direct funds first toward patient care, infrastructure, and staffing needs. Our facility's L&D team delivered education in person, and—although a priority—training records management was haphazard via various forms and mediums (paper and digitally) and under the auspices of various people.
