Casey Wade has become a self-professed "Jane of all trades" through her work in different industries, including federal training programs and corporate L&D, throughout her career. After completing a master's degree, Wade's first exposure to L&D was as a loan specialist and branch management trainee at a financial services company. That role gave her the skills she has used in the years since to pitch ideas, advocate for projects, and clearly communicate their value—which she continues to do in her current role, where she leads and delivers internal and external training programs.

What do you believe are the essential elements of talent development?

Coaching and mentorship provide personalized guidance that helps individuals identify growth areas, build confidence, and develop critical skills. Having access to a mentor created a safe space for me to ask questions, explore new perspectives, and strengthen my problem-solving abilities.

Consistent performance feedback is equally vital. In a previous role, biweekly meetings with my leader not only enhanced collaboration and innovation but also eliminated ambiguity around expectations—something I found incredibly motivating and empowering.

How do you lead by example to foster a strong company culture?

I make it a point to learn about the people with whom I work—not just their roles, but who they are beyond the workplace, enabling me to connect with them on a deeper level. The approach fosters a sense of camaraderie, builds trust, and often leads to meaningful collaboration and lasting friendships.

What career advice do you have for up-and-coming L&D professionals?

Start learning how to incorporate artificial intelligence into your work now. It's shaping the future of every profession, and you want to be the one holding the reins, not chasing the horse.

Additionally, identify areas within L&D where you feel less confident, and seek out training to build those skills. Don't shy away from new opportunities—volunteer to try something outside your comfort zone, and be open to feedback. It can be intimidating to learn something new, but the more skills you develop, the more versatile and valuable you become in the L&D field.

Who is your biggest role model?

Dolly Parton. Her unwavering kindness and commitment to charity deeply resonate with me as a woman from rural America. Like Dolly, I was raised with strong values of hospitality, compassion, and looking out for your neighbor. That foundation has shaped how I build meaningful connections with people from all walks of life.
