Studies try to pinpoint why women continue to be underrepresented at the executive level.

For years, there has been a dearth of women in top leadership roles—and a slew of research released this year doesn't paint a much brighter picture. It's a worldwide issue—for instance, a working paper published by Harvard Business School studied Swedish corporate executives, trying to figure out a logical reason for the gender gap. The researchers couldn't find a quantifiable explanation. "I believe that some type of discrimination would be the most likely story," says Matti Keloharju, one of the authors, in an interview with HBS. "But, I mean, we can never measure that directly."
