Succession planning is not easy. The process is defined as identifying and developing employees for current and future leadership roles. But there are many moving parts: performance levels, training and development opportunities customized to employees' needs, shifting competencies needed for leadership roles, and of course, employees themselves, moving in and out of roles in a given company.
