At 16, Bill McDermott borrowed $7,000 to buy the deli where he worked in Amityville, a working-class neighborhood in Long Island, New York. Deli profits paid his college tuition, and soon after graduation he sold it and talked his way into a sales job at Xerox, quickly becoming its top salesman and eventually its youngest corporate officer and division president.
