General Motors is funding 10 Goodwill organizations to invest in workforce training programs for in-demand, entry-level skilled trades jobs. The result is the Goodwill Clean Tech Accelerator, a clean energy jobs program that will enhance clean energy and skilled trade programs across the US.
The collaboration has launched four Clean Tech Accelerator locations this year in Atlanta, Georgia; Houston, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and Detroit, Michigan.
"This grant will contribute to the long-term development of a cutting-edge jobs training program and will help individuals gain living wage employment," says Steven C. Preston, Goodwill Industries International's president and CEO, in a press release. "GM's support of our skilled trades and clean energy programs helps Goodwill open new doors and strengthens the opportunities we provide to our job seekers."
Trainees will earn certifications for jobs in solar and storage, electric vehicle charging or heat pumps, and energy efficiency. Trainees will also receive paychecks as they work through the intensive, hands-on, and competency-based training.
The companies hope to expand to 20 cities and train 7,000 job seekers by 2030.
