You likely fall into one of two camps when it comes to learning technologies: When you hear about something new, you either get excited and want to learn more about how it can help you do your job better, faster, or more efficiently; or you lament how there's no budget to implement it, it'll be too difficult to adopt, or it's better to take a wait-and-see approach to determine its effectiveness. Whether you have the former or latter mindset may depend on the company you work for, your talent development budget, and maybe even your team's (or your higher-ups') tolerance for the new or unknown.
Because technologies advance at such a fast pace, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to stay up to date on all the opportunities that exist. In this month's issue, the theme articles center on one technology that I'm sure you've heard plenty about—both in and out of the talent development space—and another that you may know little about.
The first is artificial intelligence. Practically every month, TD magazine has at least one mention of AI, whether it's in reference to how a company is using AI or the latest study on AI adoption. In "The Path to AI," author JD Dillon lays out how talent development professionals should determine AI's potential in their companies. Hint: You don't have to do all the heavy lifting on your own; reach out to other departments for insights. "TD is just one part of the organization that is proactively exploring AI's potential. In fact, it's likely that the other business units are quite far ahead," Dillon writes.
The second technology is the learning experience platform. Although similar to learning management systems, LXPs are indeed different—to the extent that author Ben Betts suggests you consider having both in your organization. While outlining the LXP's key benefits, Betts says, "It will be common to find LMSs and LXPs coexisting. … Everyone should win with the deployment of a good LXP, especially alongside an effective LMS."
Has your company put any thought into using AI? Has your talent development function looked into LXPs? Both Dillon and Betts provide insights on the here and now and what's to come.
