My “Big Winning” Moment

“I was asked to work with a team that was experiencing daily conflict and the manager didn't know what to do about it. I designed a full-day session that included jump-starting team effectiveness with a round-robin activity in which members were able to freely express themselves about what they thought was going wrong and how they could improve. The second half of the day was all about self-awareness and communication, including providing participants with their DiSC behavioral styles reports.

The purpose of the two-pronged effort was to help them make the connection between culture and behavior, that if they wanted a better work environment then they had to hold themselves and each other accountable.

By the end of the day, there were tears, hugs, smiles, and a commitment to creating the kind of culture they’d all love to work in. Since then, I have been invited back to facilitate other sessions with that team.

My moment came during the last workshop I had with them, when they thanked me for helping them build better relationships with each other.

It was then that I realized that you win some and you might lose some, but when you win, you win big when it comes to effecting change within an organization.

Being able to influence transformational behavior change, even if for just one small team in a large organization, is what I call winning, and it’s why I do the work that I do!”
