When consulting firm Software Advice surveyed consumers on the methods they find most effective in selecting new software programs, it got some surprising results.

The survey revealed that the most effective tactic by far for evaluating software is checking supplier references. The least effective method is involving end users in the selection process—yet the majority of prospective software buyers (71 percent) do this. I
