Today's digital learners need training that meets them where they are. That starts well before the learning event, regardless of whether it is an in-person training event or online course. For development to be most effective, learners must understand why they're learning the material, why it's important to them and the business, and post-event expectations.

In "Focus on Moments That Matter in Employees' Learning Journey," Marek Hyla, Ariel Wrona, Grzegorz Plezia, and Natalia Kmieć-Braun detail the Moments That Matter in Corporate Learning framework, which begins with establishing learners' early understanding and continues through the learning event to learners exhibiting new behaviors.

To help instructional designers consider the people involved with each of the six moments in the framework, their effect on learners, and ways to benefit learners, the authors pose a series of questions:

  • Have you translated business objectives into learning objectives to make the target audience's learning experience relevant?

  • Have you leveraged immersive learning techniques such as simulations and social learning so learners experience flow?

  • Have you divided learning into chunks and given learners an opportunity to connect the dots through reflection and visualization?

  • Have you provided an opportunity to test or confirm learners' capabilities at the end of the course?

  • Have you discussed with supervisors how they can contribute to building a conducive learning environment? Further, it's critical to recognize learners' efforts and celebrate them throughout and at the end of the learning journey.
