Not too long ago, a leader asked me to provide feedback on one of their direct reports. I knew the individual's name, but I couldn't recall a face or even a specific instance when I worked with her. I felt terrible. I looked her up in our internal systems—no profile picture; nothing to trigger a memory. I had to somewhat sheepishly reply to the leader that I couldn't provide feedback because I couldn't pick the colleague out of a virtual crowd of faceless names. That moment resonated with me as I sat alone in my home office. The benefits of remote work are numerous; many professionals could easily catalogue the reasons. Yet there are distinct challenges to virtual work, not the least of which is a diffusion of people, relationships, and—by extension—an organization's culture.
