Thinking back over a decade to our first training adventure in China, I recently reflected on how the program initially proceeded without a glitch. We sailed through customs in Hong Kong, and enjoyed the short ferry ride to the mainland. The night before our session, our Shenzhen hosts treated us to a wonderful meal of delicacies arranged around a lazy Susan in the center of the table (I enjoyed trying everything, though as I recall, my reluctant American workshop co-leader pretty much stuck to the chicken, rice, and dumplings). The workshop was conducted in English, and an able Chinese-English interpreter worked with one of the less-fluent groups. Training materials had been successfully translated into Chinese, participants had completed all of the prework, and our boxes had cleared customs.
