The American Cancer Society begins its second century by centralizing all business services, including job training. One challenge: How to maintain its essential grassroots appeal.

It was more than a coincidence when executives at the American Cancer Society agreed that the organization's 100th anniversary in 2013 would be a perfect occasion to transform the venerable ACS. It had outgrown its organizational platform at a critical time to exercise maximum impact on the disease, they felt.
