Chester Barnard's The Functions of the Executive (Harvard University Press, 1938) is a classic, studied in management and leadership programs for many years. Barnard was an experienced executive himself, serving in senior management roles for AT&T and New Jersey Bell for more than 40 years. He balanced his business experience with a career in public service, heading up the USO in World War II, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. This book originally was published as a series of lectures and was later edited into its current form.
