The number one reason international assignments are not successful is the employee's or his/her family's inability to adjust to living overseas. Realistic predeparture expectations, motivation for going (for example, for the adventure, career development, or to make a fresh start), a positive attitude, and proper support systems are critical factors for global success. Unfortunately many companies only assess the candidate's technical expertise, management abilities, or previous international experience.
