My first day at West Charlotte High School included the principle scolding me for wearing unprofessional shoes, a security guard mistaking me for a student, and a raucous fight breaking out in my classroom. Teaching ninth-grade English was not off to a great start. Fortunately, I adapted and learned valuable lessons that continue to serve me well in my career.
