Coaching in corporate America is woefully inadequate. The most common approach to addressing this problem has been to provide training in management and coaching skills. Unfortunately, this approach seems to yield limited success. The problem is that it assumes that the lack of coaching is based on a lack of skills. However, a person's coaching ability actually is related to the role that the individual is expected to play in the organization and whether the individual has fully transitioned into that role.
