Why Is Self-Reflection Not Enough?
Loading...

Self-reflection is not enough if you want to be an ally. To be an ally, you need to use your privilege to advocate on behalf of others who don’t have the same opportunities that may be available to you. Self-reflection only touches the surface and maintains your comfort. Self-interrogation is uncomfortable yet necessary to hold yourself accountable. Self-interrogation is about pushing past what you think you know and believe about yourself. It’s about breaking down the biases and structures that protect a way of thinking. We want to see ourselves as good people. Doing so may lead to detaching from our values or even shutting down when we act out of alignment with those values. There is a difference between impactful allyship and performative allyship (for instance, allyship motivated by a desire to increase social standing rather than personal commitment).
