Advice for Job Seekers During Pandemic: Sharpen Your Skills

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Billionaire and influential businessman Mark Cuban says the millions of Americans out of work during the pandemic should use the time to brush up on their professional skills to get a leg up on the competition. “The first question every interviewer is going to ask you is: ‘What did you learn during the pandemic of 2020? What skills did you add during the pandemic of 2020?’” Cuban said in an interview. “Keep on adding to your skill set, no matter what it is,” the Shark Tank star told CBS. “I don’t care if you’re a welder, or you want to learn how to [computer] program, you want to learn about artificial intelligence, whatever it is.” According to government numbers, approximately 20 million Americans are currently collecting unemployment benefits. This means there will be a tight labor market when hiring practices return to normal, and the margins for which candidate gets the job will be razor-thin. “Wherever you want to work, use this time to become great at it because that’s where the opportunities start to open up,” Cuban added. “If you just sit back and wonder what’s next, then it becomes all the more challenging.”
